<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Well it's that time. Rather than just let this fizzle and look like another un-maintained blog without reason, I just wanted to let you all know after a lot of thought, I've decided to call it a day and finish up Urban Taggers. Much has changed over the past 3 yrs in toy blaster land- when we started out in 2010, toy stores in Australia would dedicate a shelf and a half to toy blasters and the intel was barely trickling in down under at the best of times; since then its been amazing how the market has changed so much and how stores have taken notice with whole walls now dedicated to these awesome toys.<br />
<br />
I've done my best to bring you all everything I know about toy blasters from any source I could find on the internet. We hunted and searched, negotiated and paid sometimes ridiculously high prices just to get them and review them open and honestly first so you guys would be able to decide for yourselves if they were a goer or not. We scrutinised official leads and looked for unofficial ones (<i>perhaps not always the smartest idea!</i>) but in light of all of this, I think there's evidence now to suggest things have changed and there's no longer a need to do this anymore. Toy companies are engaging more than ever with their customers, and that's awesome. Information is becoming more readily available and I think that's a good thing and if we were in any way shape or form responsible for influencing even a LITTLE bit of that, then I'm two thumbs up winning right there:)<br />
<br />
I've had a few offers to take over the reigns of UT but for now.. I just don't want that to happen. It's been my heart and soul for the past few years and I guess even though I don't have the capacity to continue anymore, I probably am a little too close to my little blog to let it go to someone else just yet.<br />
<br />
SO what happens now? There's no reason to "remove" the blog, I just won't really be updating it anymore. <i>(I probably will still admin the comments but that might take a bit of time)</i> I still love the gear and I still use social media a LOT so I'll probably still keep the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Urbantaggers.Australia?ref=ts&fref=ts" target="_blank">Facebook page</a> going too if any of you wanna still say hey. There are plenty of good sources of info out there for this sorta thing, so no doubt you'll be in good hands.<br />
<br />
Thank you so much for reading. This really was an amazing experience and I'm chuffed to think I could have been a part of this awesome toy blaster world.<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zcwoxYQbls4/Ue9hMqTqEkI/AAAAAAAARrk/cOsAbPH4rWo/s1600/1075382_135088986701929_331986740_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zcwoxYQbls4/Ue9hMqTqEkI/AAAAAAAARrk/cOsAbPH4rWo/s320/1075382_135088986701929_331986740_o.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Buzzbee doesn't have the greatest presence here in Australia, and their official website does look a little outdated but luckily we get some of our readers on the ball to send us cool stuff to view. From our Facebook page, "Braeburn MLP Fim" uploaded some things they saw at Walmart; There was an Auto Tek 20 (see after the jump) which I've seen before, but this very interesting looking Sidewinder caught my eye in a .. WHAT IS THAT? sort of way? A quick google search just comes up with photos of the X-Shot Sidewinder (<i>and of that, it's mostly pics of the blaster I sent Jerm from Nerf Mods + Reviews back in the day!) </i>which is a different beast entirely. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This one from Buzzbee looks interesting. If anything, it's unique, it's something new (somewhat), and it's like a belt fed blaster but in a drum. I'm only speculating but interesting stuff! Anyone got one? Thoughts?</div>

This Autotek 20 looks similar to a Stryfe- flywheel but multiple darts that are clip fed I think.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our German friends at <a href="http://bankcroft.de/">Bankcroft.de</a> have gotten their hands on some of the mad new gear- in this particular case they're reviewing the upcoming new Zombie Strike Sledgefire. I'm quite a fan of this blaster from an aesthetic point of view, but what's nice is Bankcroft really break it down on how it works. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
From what the video shows, it 'breaks' in half like the Barrel Break, and is designed to be a "shotgun" so it fires three darts simultaneously (<i>apparently you can't do one at a time but then if you wanted to do that, this wouldn't be the blaster of choice) </i>via a dart holder but luckily it doesn't 'spit' the empty shells out after you've fired like a Buzzbee Doubleshot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8bU4hWrQoG4/UevjHZCLw1I/AAAAAAAARrA/rePLH3D30z8/s1600/Urban-Taggers--Zombie-Strike-Sledgefire.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8bU4hWrQoG4/UevjHZCLw1I/AAAAAAAARrA/rePLH3D30z8/s320/Urban-Taggers--Zombie-Strike-Sledgefire.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another thing I find pretty interesting is another "nod" to aesthetic modders by providing cardboard stencils in the box. It seems like Nerf are actually promoting/urging fans to customise their own blasters with the Zombie Strike logo. Nifty!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
The new promo clip for the upcoming Rebelle line of "female friendly" blasters is out, and it's definitely a different approach to Nerf advertising than that in the past. Sure, it's pretty obvious there are a lot of nods to the Hunger Games with the actors running through the forest rather than urban surroundings but there's so much more to this clip that that.<br />
<br />
The interesting thing about this clip is because it's now promoting a product that's targeting girls, the message is different. And that's why I find this clip so darn interesting. Because dem marketing peeps over at Hasbro have determined that if you want to appeal to the female market, you can't just throw a mad looking product in their face and expect them to buy. The new Rebelle line seems to not just be about pink blasters; ultimately this is about creating an image or lifestyle.<br />
<br />
Which is probably why this clip seems less like a traditional Nerf ad, and more like one for Clearasil daily face wash.<br />

Firstly, let's take a look at the actors- they're clearly young and attractive and they're fully outfitted in what I guess is stylish yet "functional" clothing and look their age of early/mid teens- they could be anywhere between 13- 16, but it's very unlikely they're younger than that. Given Nerf blasters are traditionally for ages 8 and above, we've got a bit of a gap here between those who are 8, and those who are of the same age as the actors themselves. To be honest, most market research would suggest girls in their teens are less likely to want to play with toy blasters than their same age male counterparts, and those that still want to.. well they probably are happy playing with the traditional Nerf blasters anyway.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AiATiyFzvDY/UekRb-SgYSI/AAAAAAAARnk/jxnfwIWq6dU/s1600/team2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="168" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AiATiyFzvDY/UekRb-SgYSI/AAAAAAAARnk/jxnfwIWq6dU/s320/team2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oKWrbCfCvZ0/UekRdmtCGMI/AAAAAAAARnw/HlPlHAep5dA/s1600/team3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="168" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oKWrbCfCvZ0/UekRdmtCGMI/AAAAAAAARnw/HlPlHAep5dA/s320/team3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
But that's the thing. These actors are not just about appealing to girls their age, they're more about appealing to girls younger than them. It's about an ideal, something to aspire towards and to be as attractive as possible to younger girls as possible. These girls aren't just generic actors who's role is to just hold a Nerf blaster and fade into the background, we're actually supposed to be interested in them. I mean look at them- they each look different and are uniquely dressed. They're deliberately meant to be INDIVIDUAL. These young ladies are basically introduced individually one after the other and each express a different 'attitude'. They have happy and confident poses and speak with conviction. Just like with newsreaders, the camera work is close up and in their faces which commands respect and trust. These girls are speaking to you. This is aspirational stuff right here, and for me they're supposed to represent the young lady any parent would love to have as their daughter, and the big sister anyone under the age of 12 would look up to and want to be like.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ddnewjVo53k/UekRZq8qsDI/AAAAAAAARnY/O6MEF2YpIs4/s1600/fierce.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="168" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ddnewjVo53k/UekRZq8qsDI/AAAAAAAARnY/O6MEF2YpIs4/s320/fierce.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
While traditional Nerf ads are mostly about leading with the awesomeness of the blaster itself and then maybe a few non descript dudes who are partial to parkour, this Rebelle clip seems more about developing a world where these blasters belong. It's about the association of the above ideals and attitudes, maybe the general style and appearance of the actors to be attractive enough and appealing to make young girls think "i want to be like her and have that lifestyle, therefore I want that blaster". Each actor and each attitude is associated with a specific Rebelle blaster; positive reinforcement that this blaster makes you confident, fierce, determined.<br />
<br />
Check out this ad for the Nerf Stampede in 2010:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cIJvhLvmKJE?feature=player_detailpage" width="500"></iframe>
</div>
<br />
The actors are all very generic looking; dressed the same in black with dark hair. You're not supposed to pay attention to or even care about them- these ads are all about the Stampede itself. The actors are shot at a distance; the backgrounds are grey and generic and the only thing we're really supposed to care about is the bright yellow Nerf blaster. As far as any character development is concerned, the only thing the guy says is the Nerf slogan 'It's Nerf.. or nothing'. In fact before you revisited this Stampede ad, how many of you really remembered this guy? We kind of don't really care whether this guy is fierce or determine, we just care that he's got a sick Nerf gun in his hand:P<br />
<br />
The girls in the Rebelle ad have been carefully cast to portray an image that suggests empowerment while still being 'girlie' per se. They've shot this video in what looks like a typical Autumn/Fall afternoon. There are no other boys around; this is girls playing their OWN game with their own gear. Sisters are doin' it for themselves? Absolutely. And notice how at the end of the Rebelle clip, they confirm that even though they're individual and unique, they can still come together and be a team; basically suggesting this is a great way to spend time with your friends and working together.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mpXDPZi5gr0/UekRbe1m3HI/AAAAAAAARng/EoXxyOuScSM/s1600/UT-team.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="168" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mpXDPZi5gr0/UekRbe1m3HI/AAAAAAAARng/EoXxyOuScSM/s320/UT-team.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Traditional Nerf ads for "boys" don't give two shakes about that sort of thing. The blasters themselves are cool. What you do with them is your prerogative:)<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
SO what am I saying here? basically this.. unlike so many other Nerf ads in the past, there's a LOT more emphasis on the actors themselves in this Rebelle clip than just as human stands for the gear. Someone in Nerf land have determined girls need more than just fancy blasters. They need to feel something; be a part of something. They need to warm to the overall image and lifestyle and relate to those who champion said lifestyle. The way the Rebelle clip is produced, with close ups on their faces reminds me of an ad for an episode of some MTV reality show or some documentary about high school. They're strong, they're fierce, they're determined. Didn't catch that when they said it? That's ok, because they flash the words up on screen for you to absorb this again. We care a helluva lot more than non descript dudes in black skivvys that's for sure:)<br />
<br />
The strange thing about this though is.. do you think this sort of advertising would still work for guys too? I have to admit I found the Rebelle clip quite engaging, and that's a big admission from a 30 something dude recognising his mindset is the same as an 11 year old girl:) Don't boys want to be empowered too?<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--M2CqipJO9s/UekRePP-xKI/AAAAAAAARn0/cXomwR2gj_A/s1600/titles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="168" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--M2CqipJO9s/UekRePP-xKI/AAAAAAAARn0/cXomwR2gj_A/s320/titles.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nerf or Nothing vs Step Up Stand Out.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
As a final note, before we're so quick to dismiss "that works for girls", it's not the only way marketers appeal to that demographic. A blaster that's pink? Imagine if the Rebelle ad adopted a tone somewhat like the queen of pink- Barbie herself:</div>
<br /></div>

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/iFON2ArMQts?feature=player_detailpage" width="500"></iframe><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'd buy a Rebelle blaster to shoot myself after listening to that annoying voice, that's for sure!</div>

Yes, that IS a Zombie Strike MACHETE. <a href="http://www.atamaii.tv/" target="_blank">Anime toy blog Atamaii</a> posted this awesome look at the Zombie Strike presence at this year's San Diego Comic Con and it looks amazeballz. There's stuff there that we haven't seen before.. Zombie Strike Z BOMBS even?:P <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So other than the very cool looking Machete (<i>which the tag says will be released next month in the US</i>), we've also got these Z Bombs (<i>not sure if they do anything other than work like throwing a Nerf football, but they also seem to come in varieties like a buzz saw?</i>), A reskined Jolt targeting kit and accessories like bandanas and pouches. Also gives us a look at the Side Strike's holster. All and all a great piece of intel from Atamaii!</div>

<br />
A quick one- A glance at <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BD2EBO0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A12AEI8WBBTBPE" target="_blank">Amazon's UK</a> site shows three of the upcoming Rebelle line blasters and the much anticipated N-Strike Elite Rapidstrike CS-18 are listed and some even in stock now. At this stage this is as far as I could have gotten as they're not shipping to Australia (<i>sigh</i>) but hey, our UK friends can benefit from this before anyone else worldwide <br />

(<i>Amazon US is still showing September for the Rapidstrike and nada for the Rebelle at this stage)</i>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5518908358030099316.post-22218150352693626482013-07-19T10:30:00.000+10:002013-07-19T14:55:52.401+10:00NXT Generation: Hunting for wee tackers.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Most toy manufacturers have been very sensitive about the association between their blasters and real life guns.Killing? There's no killing here. And they're NOT guns, they're blasters.... Well not <a href="http://www.nxtgenoutdoors.com/" target="_blank">NXT Generation</a>; this American toy company gets straight to the point and suggests:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>"the next generation is our future; they will be the ones to protect the environment and the great sport of hunting and shooting."</i></div>

<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've never really heard of them before; I'm not sure how well this sort of marketing would go in Australia, but I was curious and did some research. Findings after the jump:)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Their range attempt to look pretty realistic but their primary blaster is the NXT shotgun, that comes with three velcro darts and three suckers. It's pump action single shot by the looks of it. and no bright colours or weird names here. Nope, it's a shotgun, and it's made to look like one:)</div>

And it appears they've been very quick to respond to Nerf's Rebelle line (<i>or perhaps they were even first to the mark for all I know)</i> with the aptly named "NXT Generation Girlz" line, although they're basically the same gear as the regular one, only pink.</div>

This sort of deviates away from the realism of their gear though, and I guess the idea of a single shooter on your hand is kinda novel?<br />
<br />
I'm a little unsure how I feel about these. They pretty much pull no punches and come right out and tell us they're about simulated hunting and replicating real life shooting. They're basically about teaching about firearms to an extent. Is this a good thing?<br />
<br />
I'm not convinced. Still.. another line of toys to consider?<br />

Singapore just seems to rock it when it comes to Nerf events. This vid from "<a href="http://vimeo.com/big3" target="_blank">Big Three Productions</a>" showcases the <a href="http://nerfpowerplay.sg/" target="_blank">official close quarters 3 on 3 Powerplay tournament</a> and it looks awesome. Interesting how they've integrated the N-Strike Elite gear into the Dart Tag world- we're spotting Strong Arms and Rough Cut 4x2's mixing it with Quick 16's. Check out the vid after the jump. Cheers JB for the link!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We've talked about how the stricter safety standards of certain countries (like Australia) have resulted in a grey trigger for the Elite series of nerf blasters, but it looks like the design will be extended to the other upcoming lines too. Here, spotted on Baidu is a grey triggered Zombie Strike Hammer Shot. Other than it being of a person's lap/crotch, it's a really nice high res image of the Hammer Shot:)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What's interesting is I've started to see sales on Taobao of N-Strike Elite gear where you can CHOOSE whether you want an orange trigger or a grey trigger- grey being cheaper:) Not really a big deal if you're going to mod them anyway:)</div>

</tbody></table>
Ok, Straight off the bat- I'm a completionist so no doubt I'll end up with all of the new Zombie Strike gear, no question. Nerf, you have my money. However, after a few hours and some sleep in between my<a href="http://urbantaggers.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/io9-nerf-zombie-strike-full-line-up.html" target="_blank"> 4am post</a> on the new Zombie Strike kit, I've managed to sit down and really look at this new line up a little more carefully, and I have to concur with a few of the comments already made by some readers that there's something about the release of these new blasters that just doesn't quite sit right.<br />
<br />
And so I think it's time for a good and hearty rant piece:)<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
For me, my initial response to the Zombie Strike line was that it was a nod to aesthetic modders- So much of the styling is already done already and this was Nerf's attempt at creating a role play universe per se that these blasters belonged. It's like up until this point, Nerf was about blasters themselves and fans were left to their own devices as to whether they were going imagining realistic style mil sim, sci fi futuristic aliens, steampunk or whatever with their games. Now we've got a line that actually suggests the world where they belong- these are used against zombies, with blasters that look raw and makeshift almost in their aesthetic design. Zombie apocalypse? hells yes:)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NEWoT_gTsk8/UdYRU_bdGCI/AAAAAAAARak/dXALTIr0Ywo/s1600/Urban+Taggers-+Nerf+Zombiestrike+hammershot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="248" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NEWoT_gTsk8/UdYRU_bdGCI/AAAAAAAARak/dXALTIr0Ywo/s320/Urban+Taggers-+Nerf+Zombiestrike+hammershot.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
What was also interesting was bringing out a relatively "grown up" theme to blasters as well. Zombies traditionally are in the realms of horror- they're the walking dead and they're supposed to be scary and therefore something your standard 8yo kid is not supposed to be exposed to. Not any more:) Whereas before official marketing has shied away from adding any form of conflict or parallels to real guns, this is the first time I can think where they've officially acknowledged Nerf as being about shooting at someone- even if it is something that's already dead:)<br />
<br />
And it's purely a role play thing here, because as much as formalised games like HVZ are all about zombies in theme, as far as a game is concerned, it's all about bootloads of firepower, which none of this line actually have. There are no 35 plus drums here.<br />
<br />
When we first got word of the new Zombie Strike blasters, the first thing that really stuck out for me was their original styling; they actually looked faux post apocalyptic:) The "bandaged" hand grips and rough looking designs were pretty novel in the Hammershot, and they continued on with the Sledgefire. The types of blasters they were also fit in with that neo-western feel that we always associate with zombie apocalypses and we were also seeing all new firing mechanisms with the Hammershot being hammer cocked (<i>and in turn able to be dual wielded</i>) and the Sledgefire with shell holders and firing 3 darts at a time. Original designs, new firing mechanisms, consistent with theme, all and all, and enthusiastic two thumbs up from the UT stable.<br />
<br />
Now this 2014 lineup.. well I dunno. It seems to be the upcoming new gear is a different beast entirely and seems to go against this completely. At first, the first thing you see is "OOH CROSSBOW" and yup, that fits into the zombie world we know and love like a glove, and so I think that was what pretty much set the tone for excitement and interest of the new line until after a few more glances and I was "err hang on.."<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cqvsLG50kXo/Ud7wwU1bBTI/AAAAAAAARiE/fP8BRAOHyT0/s1600/Urban+Taggers-+Zombie+Strike+Crossbow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cqvsLG50kXo/Ud7wwU1bBTI/AAAAAAAARiE/fP8BRAOHyT0/s320/Urban+Taggers-+Zombie+Strike+Crossbow.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So let's talk about said crossbow, or the official name of it being the Zombie Strike Crossfire- it's pretty awesome looking. I mean, I love it, I want it, it's cool, as I've said earlier- crossbows are the new black. It pays homage to the old school crossbow by firing darts rather than big foam arrows (<i>and they even mention it in their press release with the "iconic crossbow action to the Nerf line for the first time in almost twenty years</i>) and it actually looks like they've designed it as a crossbow in mind, as opposed to a blaster that they just stuck a crossbow head and string. What is different however, is its styling doesn't look as in line with the Hammershot and Sledgefire, and as noted by <a href="http://mylastdart.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">My last Dart</a>, appears to feature the mark of N-Strike Elite in the grip, suggesting this blaster was originally designed as an Elite blaster first.<br />
<br />
It's got the stock attachment nub at the back, and it doesn't have the faux bandages around the grip; the green and orange and grey make it almost look like a Vortex blaster! Bottom line- for ours it looks more "polished" and less post apocalyptic than its previous Zombie Strike peers. An N-Strike Elite repaint perhaps? (<i>can it even be called a repaint if it's never been painted as an N-Strike Elite blaster in the first place?!:P)</i><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6QVEpJV0M2o/Ud7wxs7SrfI/AAAAAAAARic/OZ7dP5Gk-Yw/s1600/Urban+Taggers-+Zombie+Strike+Sidefirejpg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6QVEpJV0M2o/Ud7wxs7SrfI/AAAAAAAARic/OZ7dP5Gk-Yw/s320/Urban+Taggers-+Zombie+Strike+Sidefirejpg.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The other new dart blaster in the Zombie Strike lineup is the "Side Strike" and it's a single shooter, sort of like a re-imaging of the old N-Strike Scouts. It also features the N-Strike Elite logo in the grip and has no faux bandages and again deviates from the post apocalyptic styling of the original Zombie Strike blasters. In fact you could easily release this in N-Strike Elite blue and it'd look right at home. I do like the tactical rail at the bottom of the muzzle, but it makes no sense for it to be for a front grip, so here's hoping Nerf bring out some light accessory that'd be at home in this position.<br />
<br />
An interesting marketing/design move is to introduce Vortex into the Zombie Strike lineup; Vortex for me has always been sort of sci-fi futuristic and I always saw the XLR discs visually emulating laser beams, so bringing them into the post apocalyptic neo-western front seems like an odd decision. These ones for me look like a blatant repaint of what look like were to be originally part of the Vortex black/white and red schemes. Their designs are very much similar to the Diatron and they look way too high tech/futuristic for the world that the original two Zombie Strike blasters have sort of presented. They also have no visible tactical rails, no faux bandages and all and all nothing to say they really belong in this space.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TfLHifHGxPA/Ud7wyPzGUvI/AAAAAAAARio/NCD6Di9SUCg/s1600/Urban+Taggers-+Zombie+Strike+Vortex.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="224" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TfLHifHGxPA/Ud7wyPzGUvI/AAAAAAAARio/NCD6Di9SUCg/s320/Urban+Taggers-+Zombie+Strike+Vortex.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
That being said, appreciating the blasters themselves, I do really like the Fusefire's chunky design and its continuous firing mechanism is pretty cool for easy reloads (<i>hopefully on the fly</i>). The discs on these are said to be 'glowing' but there's no mention on batteries like a firefly unit but that transparent bar on the top might be for lighting them up. The Ripshot and Ricochets look like glorified Protons being single shot and for me nothing exciting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2mG0yQvLiOU/Ud70O2sgOeI/AAAAAAAARi4/WWHRZv2vcVg/s1600/Urban+Taggers-+Zombie+Strike+Sword.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="130" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2mG0yQvLiOU/Ud70O2sgOeI/AAAAAAAARi4/WWHRZv2vcVg/s320/Urban+Taggers-+Zombie+Strike+Sword.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Finally there's the N-Force Blade. As a sword, it looks pretty. I like the design though again, it looks like it's a repaint of something that belongs in another universe (<i>Thundercats? Voltron? just something else!</i>) other than zombies. When I think of blades in Zombies, I think of machetes, or axes, or knives or even cleavers and baseball bats but not really full length swords.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jMpaMRvOQMo/Ud9sH0LJK1I/AAAAAAAARjI/swzh_FCStFs/s1600/the-four-zombie-killers-zombieland-the-zombie-comedy-18765023-1600-1200.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jMpaMRvOQMo/Ud9sH0LJK1I/AAAAAAAARjI/swzh_FCStFs/s320/the-four-zombie-killers-zombieland-the-zombie-comedy-18765023-1600-1200.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Maybe Nerf are creating a new Zombie universe for these blasters to sit in- but on closer inspection, it does seem to be that the Zombie Strike Hammershot and Sledgefire were designed by a different crew to the rest of the lineup. All of the points for originality and difference for those bad boys unfortunately go a little begging in the new gear. If this had been through Baidu leaks, we might have said "these are pre releases" or "prototypes" and cross our fingers for the final product, but this is official word from Hasbro, so it's looking like this is it.<br />
<br />
What's important I guess for blaster fans is there are new units coming in the foreseeable future, but as far as a theme to tie them all together, it seems somewhat disjointed. Of the 2013 lineup I really like the Hammershot and Sledgefire, but as far as the 2014 line is concerned I just wish they'd maybe taken a bit more time with the release and made them more true to the zombie theme.<br />
<br />
Still, there's a lot of new gear to be had, and oh yes.. I shall have them:D<br />
<br />
<i>Note- Official word from Hasbro Australia- Hammershot and Sledgefire will be released October 2013 in Australia, with the 2014 line TBA.</i><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Up until this point, Nerf's upcoming Zombie Strike line has been a little left field, coming out of nowhere and with little intel on what it is and how it'll line up alongside other Nerf gear. Out of the blue, pop culture and tech site io9 just got the mad exclusive to the official Zombie Strike press release, complete with what we love the most- details of NEW BLASTERS. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

There's something about the Nerf N-Strike Vulcan that just lends itself to being modded. It's big and awesome and still gets the "OMG" reaction from non-nerfers to this day, but it's never really the primary blaster of choice for most players due to it's size and relatively slow reloading mechanism (<i>that and no other blaster in the Nerf line uses the belts</i>). The Vulcan's bulk and the fact it even comes with a tripod suggests it's made to be stationary- and in turn it tends to be the blaster of choice for engineering types who want like tinkering with electronics- and build cool stuff like.. oh I dunno.. automated sentry guns:)<br />
<br />
I've seen several varieties- however this one from <a href="http://www.instructables.com/member/BrittLiv/" target="_blank">Instructable user Brittliv</a> is the latest and perhaps one of the more advanced ones I have found with not just motion sensor tracking, but also the ability to differentiate between friend or foe by.. what they're wearing:D Video after the jump. Awesome:)<br />

That translucent blue stock we've all been speculating on that was spotted on Baidu now has an official home; as we thought, the Retaliator is coming out in Sonic Ice finish, and by the looks of it complete with a clear clip! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lego is definitely one of the all time success stories in the toy world, being around since the late 1940's and still maintaining its place as one of the best selling toys of all time. We love Lego, but it's not something we'd normally cover under Urban Taggers; well not until we picked up this very cool book from dem good peeps at geek culture publisher '<a href="http://nostarch.com/catalog/lego" target="_blank">No Starch Press</a>'. They do some very cool books on a variety of geeky stuff but it's their Lego related publications that I love- not quite the normal Lego models you'd get in stores, with some really tough looking (<i>and somewhat realistic</i>) replicas of guns that fire rubber bands:)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gsD7JhO1_DY/UduZv1atseI/AAAAAAAARg0/2lz2YKl8Jf4/s1600/Urban-Taggers--Lego-Handguns03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gsD7JhO1_DY/UduZv1atseI/AAAAAAAARg0/2lz2YKl8Jf4/s320/Urban-Taggers--Lego-Handguns03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This particular publication we received is called "The BrickGun Book" and has pretty easy to follow detailed instructions to build a number of working (<i>ie shooting rubberband</i>s) pieces. Admittedly in the beginning I was like "I dunno.. not sure if this is my thing"- several hours later (<i>and admittedly my working model is currently somewhat multicoloured as I don't have that many black pieces!</i>) I'm a fan:) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The book is available from most book retailers- Amazon, Barnes + Noble etc, but No Starch have been pretty cool in giving our readers a substantial <b>30 PERCENT OFF </b>discount to our readers if they order the book on <a href="http://nostarch.com/catalog/lego" target="_blank">their website</a>- just punch in '<b>TAGGERS</b>' on checkout and the coupon works for both buying the physical and digital copies of the book. (<i>Coupon might even work for other books from their line too, haven't checked just yet</i>) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
More samples of the book's pages after the jump:) Thanks Jess from No Starch Press for the coupon code!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Quite a while back in 2010 when Nerf were churning out bootloads of repaints of their N-Strike blasters, <a href="http://urbantaggers.blogspot.com.au/2010/10/rumours-sonic-series.html" target="_blank">we made a comment that what we thought would look REALLY cool:</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><b> "I'd like to see translucent blue actually, that'd look priddy:)"</b></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i><b><br /></b></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well bless their cotton foam socks, Nerf have done exactly that and it looks like they'll be releasing a new translucent blue version of some their Elite blasters called "Sonic Ice". At this stage here's a bootload of pics after the jump serving as confirmation of the Elite Rampage courtesy of Baidu user Wei Ping, and the mysterious translucent blue stock floating around on Baidu suggests the Retaliator will also get the Sonic Ice treatment as well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If previous repaints are any indication, we should see something like the Strongarm and the Firestrike possible getting the Sonic Ice treatment too, but that's just me speculating. What do you reckon would make for a likely blaster to be released in translucent blue?</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We saw these Nerf Vortex repaints featured at some of the toy fairs early this year and they're starting to make it onto shelves in the US. Our good pal Dave in Tennessee spotted this Proton in his local Target; I for one welcome the new scheme as the old putrid green was definitely not in favour at UT basecamp:P </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also like the new colour of the XLR discs although they do sorta remind me of a breath mint- look how happy the model is. He too likes fresh mint firing goodness!:P</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Spotted on the Target (US) website- Perhaps zombies just don't care for standard blue Elite darts. And the pink collectible darts of the Rebelle series- well you might as well just feed them your brains right there and then. No, if you want to really take out a mean and nasty zombie horde, you have to do it with these officially badged Zombie Strike yellow darts. Yellow gets 'em every time. Just like Green Lantern. Pack of 30, for 10 bucks US.</div>

Also found on the US <a href="http://www.target.com/p/nerf-zombie-strike-sledgefire/-/A-14537510#prodSlot=medium_1_1&term=sledgefire" target="_blank">Target</a> website is the Nerf Zombie Strike Sledgefire. We've not known a whole lot about this blaster other than what we got officially from Hasbro, but it seems to be as predicted a "shotgun-esque" blaster that fires 3 rounds at once with an ammo holder built into the stock. Comes with the yellow darts as we saw with the Hammershot. I'm not a fan of the colour scheme but I do like the original styling- looks like it's got a tactical rail and uses a "break" system to load the dart ammo cartridges. As with all shotgun style blasters, I'm not sure how practical they are for actual gameplay, but as far as roleplay and just for kicks, I think this one's a winner:)</div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9fdAwGsiaKk/UdYhJJWirUI/AAAAAAAARco/qRujXr_dCIU/s800/Urban-Taggers--Mission-App-Tactical-Rail-Mount17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9fdAwGsiaKk/UdYhJJWirUI/AAAAAAAARco/qRujXr_dCIU/s320/Urban-Taggers--Mission-App-Tactical-Rail-Mount17.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's a strong believe out there in toyland that integrating smartphone apps to toy blasters is the next big thing. Hasbro included it with their Lazer Tag Augmented Reality line last year with limited success, but they weren't prepared to give up on the idea and have pushed it with the upcoming new "made for girls" Rebelle line and now also the N-Strike Elite series will get its own app and iOS device mount. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hasbro Australia have been kind enough to send us one of these "Mission App Tactical Rail Mount" attachments, although alas we can't really do a WHOLE lot with it given access to the free downloadable app won't be made available till August. It's also only for Apple iOS devices <i>(and by that we mean iPhone 4 and above and iPod touch 4 and above) </i>so that also cancels me out somewhat given I don't like Apple devices:P I can't review the app itself either, but from what the instructions say it does sound a lot less like the A.R games found in the LTARs and more like what Tek Recon are proposing. Time will tell I guess. </div>

Thanks to everyone who sent this to me; that mysterious Nerf Zombie Strike Hammershot now gets official box art to go with the images we saw a while back. Hasbro Australia made it official for us with their press release, but it looks like it's made an appearance on the official <a href="http://www.target.com/p/nerf-zombie-strike-hammershot/-/A-14497493?ref=tgt_adv_xasd0001&AFID=Performics_Skimlinks_0004e0b89a35584f0a42f56f1a00161f&LNM=SkimLinks%20Primary%20Link#prodSlot=medium_1_41&term=nerf" target="_blank">Target</a> US website. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NEWoT_gTsk8/UdYRU_bdGCI/AAAAAAAARac/hn4Mh_DyULA/s608/Urban+Taggers-+Nerf+Zombiestrike+hammershot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="248" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NEWoT_gTsk8/UdYRU_bdGCI/AAAAAAAARac/hn4Mh_DyULA/s320/Urban+Taggers-+Nerf+Zombiestrike+hammershot.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What I'm seeing here is a new visual design here, not just in the blaster but with their box art going with more of a comic artwork feel than the traditional "grim- dude- in- black- turtleneck" design. Also noticing the bright yellow darts and the "Only at Target" badge. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What's also quirky is the complete lack of PR material on the Zombie Strike line and it pops up on a Target US website just like that, whereas the Rebelle line has been very public and vocal over the past 6 months and it still hasn't made it to shelves yet. In contrast, our official info from Hasbro Australia gave us the dates/names of the Zombie Strike gear straight up, but we were given a "watch this space" word on Rebelle. Interesting huh?!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's being listed at $14.99 US so assuming it'll be under 20 bucks here in Australia if/when it's released. Keen?</div>
