Review: Nerf N-Strike Firefly REV-8

Nerf N-Strike Firefly REV-8 Unique. Definitely.
The Nerf N-Strike Firefly REV-8 is a weird gun. I'd resisted getting it several times, simply because I wasn't really a fan of how it looked. I was also not sure if "glow in the dark" foam darts was really a selling point for me. And.. again.. I really wasn't a fan of how it looked.

When I finally picked one up, I have to admit.. it's pretty cool. The revolving barrel supports 8 foam micro sucker darts; it comes with 8 glow in the dark white darts I might add. And although the gun itself looks rather odd and bulky, it's actually quite comfortable to hold and the back of the gun makes for a makeshift stock in your shoulder/chest.

What makes the Firefly so unique is the fact it "flashes" a bright light every time you hit the trigger (assuming A) you put batteries in the gun, and B) you turned this light feature on). It does this so that it can illuminate/charge the glow in the dark darts just before you fire them off, ensuring they shoot off into the darkness in a easy to find glow-in-the-dark green.

Sounds gimmicky? It is. But... it's also pretty cool:) When I first bought the Firefly I was sure I wouldn't bother with the glow in the dark foam darts, but now that I've got one, I want to buy more replacement ammo!

Priming the gun for firing is as simple as the Maverick- merely pulling back the top rear slider on the gun cocks it, readying it for firing. The gun feels quite durable and well made, and also comes with the Tactical Rail grooves on the top of the gun so you can fit it out with all of those N-Strike Mission Kit add ons for aesthetics. It holds and fires two extra darts compared to the Maverick and feels similar in performance but a lil down in accuracy (probably because it's so much bigger). It also costs more than double the price at around $40.00 AUS and above.

The Firefly is an interesting piece of hardware- I find you either love it or hate it and I have to admit it's a piece I'm glad I picked up. It's just a lil' pricey for what it is.

Usability: 6.5/10
Out of the box performance: 7/10
Cool factor: 7/10
Price point: 6.5/10

  1. I must admit, I love this thing. My friend had the older blue one with the midnight mav; nothing feels cooler than dueling those puppies. :-)

the only thing i dislike is how loud it is and that the bullets sometimes shoot and leave the stickers in the drum. X-(

  11. Yes, the Firefly has been given a new box art, like almost all other N-strike blasters.
And there has to be a really god reason why you couldn't do it urself.

  16. I only wish Nerf would created a Bullpup-styled blaster like this, but with Clip System features. I love how the Firefly feels when held, tight against your body and with a very low profile, but it's capacity is it's main drawback. I have seen mods that allows the user to pull out its cylinder and replace it with a fresh one, however...

  17. I like mine but its range sucks. It'll shoot two feet and then its done. Although mine is kind of old I doesn't do it for me. I'm a Barrel Break kind of guy. 8-)

  19. this gun is great just dont put the stickers that come with the darts. a: they dont make them glow b: they come off in the gun and become hard to get out c: the stickers peel off and jam the gun d: they dearcease the range of the gun. i think the gun itself is great firing at great ranges without the paper on the darts and it holds the most darts out of any REV blaster. just a little bulky. again DONT PUT THE PAPER ON THE DARTS IT DOSENT REALLY HELP THEM GLOW EITHER.
