Nerf Vortex: Test fire and Range tests vids

So we did our best to do some range test vids for y'all in a very short period of time. Neil and I hit my apartment block's underground carpark and measured out 60 ft- The full length of the tape measure we used was just over 26 feet. Sooo.. to the last/furthest witches hat cone was 60 ft. Given it's an underground carpark, there's next to no wind making it down there, and from what I could tell, Neil was shooting pretty much straight on (he's a lot taller than I!)

Basically, all of the four Vortex blasters made the 60ft range, some even exceeding. That being said, accuracy goes down pretty much after you pass the 40ft mark, so with the vids where I'm standing at the 60ft mark, I don't think Neil hit me once (and it's not because he's a bad shot or anything!)

Neil got so excited he dropped his load

We plan to do more in future, but I alas had some serious deadlines to hit for my day job that I had to get back to, and I am flying out of the country over the weekend, so we did do our best for now:) Videos after the jump.

  1. Do these disks hurt on contact at close range or do they feel like soft frisbees hitting you?

I want to make sure these are safe for Humans vs. Zombies.

  2. You don't get more into HVZ than Neil; we've shot each other several times at close range with no problem. The XLR discs shoot fast and far, but they're soft enough to not hurt.

I'm sure if you copped one in the eye it wouldn't tickle, but on the whole they're pretty safe. (I shot myself in the head while doing a vid in a previous post and I'm ok!)

  3. Do the discs survive being stepped on okay? Any signs of flex or wear after they've been fired?

  4. Because most of their distance is reliant on the aerodynamic principles of lift, they will probably go a lot farther when the blaster is angled

  5. This is just awesome. Can't wait. Vortex looks rockin'. Thank you Urban Taggers for these awesome reviews.

  6. I thought for once we Americans got the jump on ya, especially with Foam From Above's Vigilon post and then you bring out this! Talk about raising the stakes. Bow down to you Pocket (and Neil too)

  7. What was the approximate average for each blaster?

  8. Seems that they curve a bit towards the end of their range. But at least they seem to curve consistently, as opposed to streamlines which go all over the place.

  9. Does the praxis have slam fire? It appears to have a similar pump action as a raider or AT...

  10. I'm happy Nerf finally got over their distance problems, but the reason they feel comfortable making better distances with these is because parents won't be able to complain about Vortex seeming too much like real guns, which was a big problem with N-Strike and the other Nerf guns. Discs definitely wont be compared to bullets as easy as darts can.

finally nerf vortex guns I'm going to get one but which the nitron or praxis??. Don't know could some please give me a tell me which one is better?.

  12. Do you have the other manuals, you showed the proton and the nitron ones a while ago, what about the vigilon and praxis?

  13. To anyone that has any of these guns, did you notice how the aiming is off to the right but an inch? For my Praxis and Proton, they both have a miss alignement and shoots from the right of the barrel, instead of the middle. Is that just me, or is this normal?

  14. I must say I am pretty disappointed. These things seem to shoot just like a modded N-Strike Clip blaster. Including the impossibility for an aimed shot for anything over 35 ft. or so... I think I will be getting more involved with Light Strike, as it offers aimed shots the whole distance...

  15. Hiro, I got a praxis today, and I have the same thing. Have you also noticed how slow the discs go?

  16. Above me ^

Yours too? I know its a minor thing, but for some reason it really bugs me, sucks that it seems to be in most units (if anyone else has that problem, let us know!)

The disc speed for me at least, slows down when it reaches about 30 or so feet, but that was only with certain discs that were already slightly worn out (out of the box, no less, i think it was returned X.x)

I did some play tests with my friend that also bought a praxis and nitron, and in the case of practical shoot-eachother fun, they still do justice mid range with speed and accuracy, as expected with this sort of thing. Long distance is still a minor worry, but thats with all blasters, both disc and dart, thats just to be expected.

  17. Its funny about the guy who's "dissappointed" doesnt seem to grasp the concept with toy blasters and how weather dart or disk (but alot moreso with darts) that long distance super accurate shots are near impossible unless yoru target is actually decent sized (like a person as opposed to a water bottle on top of a tv).

I've toyed around with the Vigilon and Proton, and as mentioned earlier, these discs still are really accurate over 40 feet. Unlike darts, discs with just a minor angle adjustment, i get really close to my target, if not hit it the next shot. (practiced on a water bottle) but if you actually do plan on human battles, that "slow down" you get over medium distances doesnt really affect gameplay, especially if your using Praxis or even Nitron. So I wouldnt sweat it.

  18. My question is whether or not the vortex blasters are better for nerf battles

    ReplyDelete
  19. To the above ^

Based on how you use the blasters, they're either the same performance, or by preffernce.

Like the Proton and Vigilon; they're primarly used for close quarters after you use up your main gun or whatnot. It really doesnt matter at that point if you go with since accuracy isnt sacrificed with discs until medium quarters.

Praxis and Nitron are just preference, from my experience. Praxis's performance is equivalent to the Alpha Trooper, while Nitron is the eqivalent to a Stampede. Both loose accuracy mid range, but the discs still fly farther even with the accuracy drop.

Overall, just comes down to preference. Just speaking for me, I use the Vortex hand blasters, and keep using Dart blasters for rifle types.

  20. Thing is, what will n-strike have to counter? pure fanboyism? longshots?
I can see these blasters messing up balence in most nerf wars.
How can buzz bee and air zone compete, what will they release?

  21. At this point its just people who are loyal to darts and cant try the switch (yah, there are surprisingly ALOT of those type of people x.x) And right now, the styles of Vortex is still limited, and people have preference not only to darts, but the type of blaster as well (shotgun, rifle, semi auto, etc) which N-Strike has more of, of course. Vortex, right now, wont be a game changer *yet* so hang on to your favorites =D

And think of it this way: They're a nice diversion from the norm XD

  22. I have a praxis and when i try to hit small targets from 12ft away, the discs curve and I miss my target. Otherwise, I am impressed and I like the designs.

  23. if u shoot a disc at a wall facing it straight will the discs get damaged or will they just ricochet right off????????

    ReplyDelete
  24. do the darts break easily

    ReplyDelete
  25. FUCK YOU ALL THE PRAXIS IS AWESOME

    ReplyDelete
  26. You need to adjust your shooting angle to get it right. Since it's a disc, it's flight is affected by the air flow. If you're gonna fire it like a dart blaster, you won't get the range, nor the accuracy. You'll need to fiddle around to get it right.

Fired the disc from close range (<10 ft.) disc ricochets off the wall or any other objects even at 30ft. It is true the discs hover after a certain distance. But you'll still hit your target at further ranges. Midrange is awesome. The foam on the disc is way more durable than the darts. They don't damage so easily. Avoid shooting at sharp objects as disc performance will be affected by damaged discs.
