Forget the product leaks that we got our hands on in the past, I'm simply talking of what's occurring in stores. This year we've already had sightings of the Retaliator and Rampage blasters readily available to buy more than 2 months before launch. More importantly, e-tailers are getting in on this, with giants like Amazon already making them available to buy online, AND with international shipping.
I have no doubt that in the past few days, Amazon.com would have gotten a significant spike in Nerf orders from overseas. Given the US models are apparently the ones that boast the higher performance ranges than the detuned Australian versions, I can imagine Nerf gun early adopters all over the country would have slapped down their credit cards and picked themselves up a piece of the full strength N-Strike Elite pie and will be shooting much further and in turn much sooner than the 9-9 date. This might be great news for the US market, but it's gotta be a kick in the pants for the already flailing domestic retail one.
Retail lately has always been crying foul of online sales; the lack of GST charged on imported items means many local sellers cannot compete with imported grey goods. The thing is, THIS is a whole different issue right here. Because buying Nerf locally IS cheaper than importing from overseas given the shipping costs. People buy online though, because they can get, what they want whereas Australia, doesn't have the gear. Not yet anyway.
Officially by Australian intel.. doesn't exist:D |
The one saving grace is Nerf early adopters tend to buy more than one unit of their favourite blasters, so our local market won't miss out completely. The thing about Nerf though is once someone gets into it, they very quickly move into the affectionato fan category from the casual player category, which means the NEXT time they purchase, they will be a lot more aware and less easy to impress. When I first got into writing about toy guns, the Nerf shelf of any toy store was pretty small. I remember the midnight sales at Kmart from several years ago where the whole Nerf range on shelf could be easily cleaned out by 5 die hard fans with a shopping cart.
Pyragon. Want want.. and will get. Overseas probably. |
Great post Pocket!
ReplyDeleteExcellent points, as usual! You hit the nail on the head, buddy. In the end, we just need to hook you up with a Pyragon, don't we? ;)
ReplyDeleteI have to say, these launch dates are getting pretty redundant. I ordered a retaliator and rampage this morning for sightly more than what a raider normally sells for here, including shipping. And they will both arrive before the australian versions hit.
ReplyDeleteI had to go to Singapore to get my Swarmfire!
ReplyDeleteWe DID eventually get them here though, a year later...
I love this blog, and it's interesting how Nerf in the US engage with blogs I've never even heard of who I doubt would have even half of the readership Urban Taggers has. I can't see that as being marketing smarts.
ReplyDeleteAs an American myself, isn't it crazy that I, and so many people I know look to an Australian site to tell us all about what's going on in the Nerf war world? I doubt I'd be the only one.
Keep up the good work UT!
I saw my first Nerf Speedload 6 in a local Adelaide Kmart the other day. The only thing that had stopped me buying it online was it's mixed reviews; same story as the Quick 16, which I think looks outstanding.
ReplyDeleteIncidently, the Speedload 6 was $19, I bought it and I don't see why people have had an issue with it.
@Nerf Merc: If you're thinking about getting a 16, then go for it. :D It is a fabulous looking piece of kit, and once you learn how to operate it properly, it is very cool. It is a bit less powerful than the new Swarmfire, but I think the 16 is more a close-quarters blaster anyway.
DeleteI was doing some reading on the Nerf Wiki this morning and it turns out all of the 2011 Dart Tag series got a re-release to match the blue trigger of the speedswarm. That is except the Quick 16, but I'll probably still pick one up on my next amazon order anyway. Luckily I have a job and an understanding girlfriend... 36 blasters and $1000 later.
DeleteIncidently, I received my Nerf Rayven yesterday and put 2 normal AA's and 2 high voltage size 14500 batteries (via Black Tactical) in it. I got mixed ranges, including a dart I had to get off the shed roof 22 meters away. Firing flat with very minimal wind. I looove flywheel blasters and high voltage batteries.
Nerf Merc you're a man after my own heart. I love my juiced up Rayven. And protip: use the glow in the dark streamlines. Harder foam. You'll get a few more metres out of them ;-)
DeleteCool, thanks for the tip. I was using Glow in the dark streamlines, but I'm also keen to test the Ferdelance Darts (via Black Tactical). It's just a matter of time and the space, where I'm not going to fishing darts from odd places.
DeleteSquadron of Foam Tasmania [Alex] I'm currently running a modified Rayven running at 12.6v. I tend to favour the *old* Ferdelance darts from Black Tactical over streamlines. They don't go as far as streamlines, but they are wayyy too innacurate. However the Ferdelance ones... HOLY MOLY are they accurate!
DeleteThey've actually just brought out "V2" versions which I've got 30 of them on the way and gonna give them a go :P
Hey pocket, same happens to me too. In Hong Kong, the new dart tag(aka.dart tag 2.0) came out pretty late, STILL no magstrike and there is no Longshot.

Ah, yessss! We know the old pre-lawyers Pocket is back when he releases not one, but TWO good long rants in a row! Welcome back to the NIC, and it's good to have you! :)
ReplyDeleteWell said Pocket! I purchased my Jolt's online and now the Rampage and Retaliator. Local retailers will still get my business when the Elite range are available for mods. Though if you are a Nerfer that doesnt mod it would still make sense to get the US version.
