How did you fit 16.8 V into such a small battery compartment? What kind of batteries are you using?

ReplyDelete@Mou Cow, I'm sure Neil will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they're using 4 of the 14500s. They're the same size as AA batteries, so they'd just drop in without any modding necessary.
ReplyDelete@Neil, have you had any experiences where having the motors running too long at the increased voltage has caused them to automatically shut off? I know the Barricade has a thermistor in its circuit that would temporarily disable the blaster if you ran higher voltages through it for too long at a time (I believe people were saying it would kick in after about a minute of sustained motor use). Seeing as you only have the two, I wouldn't ask you to sacrifice one to stress tests, but I (and probably many others) are interested in how the 14500s will affect the longevity of the blaster.

ReplyDeleteHm, I'm not sure if I'll bother relocating the pressure switch to be trigger-activated on this one. It was necessary on the Barricade, since it was in an awkward spot, but the design of the pressure switch on this one is almost exactly the same as what the standard mod is on the Barricade and it's right next to the trigger.

I take from the pictures that Neil tapped the batteries from the clip to amp it up to 12V with 1.5V Batteries. But that'll not work for 14V... I guess I'll have to get those expensive 3,7V Trustfires (and a charging device)eventually...:(
ReplyDeleteAs for how the dart pusher works: In one of the pictures you can see a small metal wire that connects to a lever. Pull the trigger makes the lever turn, which pulls the wire, which in turn pulls the dart pusher.

-(^^^ Correct Anon)The dart loading is done manually via the lever connected to the wire that runs the leanth of the blaster. This is attached to the dart pusher.
-There is a flywheel trigger lock that prevents the main trigger being depressed unless its spun up, a clip lock and a jam door lock.
-There are 4 resistors on the motors and a diode on the power line.

ReplyDeleteI don't think it's ever been thought to be full auto. From day dot we expected it to be exactly what it is- a rear fed flywheel semi auto clip based blaster.

ReplyDeleteWhat is the dart pusher mechanism, and how is it connected to the trigger? I cannot see any physical pieces connecting them in these pictures, which worries me, as I see, instead, wires connecting to that area. Granted, logic says that they are probably for the pressure switch for the jam door (an electric trigger on a semi-auto blaster would be a complete waste of money), but I can't help but feel uneasy...
What type of blue LEDs does the FT clip contain? In this picture, it looks like a bar, but that would be uncharacteristically expensive for Nerf... Is it a few normal chips behind a diffuser panel?
Finally, are the flywheels smooth-edged like the Nitron's, or toothed like the Barricade's? As I stated in another post, I find the design of the latter to be far noisier. And what is the purpose of the patterns on the sides? Do the flywheels have actual weights in them now?

ReplyDeleteA little more details on the batteries:
I was using 4 x 'Ultrafire' 14500 AA 3.7v 900 mAh Lithium Rechargeable batteries. Each battery is 4.2 volts fully charged. The batteries themselves and charger are quite reasonably priced. I sourced mine from a reputable Hong Kong seller. I've had problems with the 'Trustfires' but I may have got a bad batch or they were rip off copies.
I cant see the internal barrel effecting the range too much. Its only 5 inches long or so, and if you were to remove the front piece you'd have to glue the barrel into the flywheel assembly - it slides in but the front piece keeps it in place with a couple of screws.
Also, I ran it pretty much all afternoon at 16 volts and at no stage did the motors shut off. However I wouldnt recommend running it at that voltage all the time. Me and the crew are still fiddling about to find the best voltage level. It may even be a case of swappig out motors for something that will take a bit more juice.
Would you mind posting the dimensions of the motors?

again I'd like to ask what prevents darts from popping out the top? if you have old shrunken darts they sometimes pop out the top of the clip in most clip blasters part of the breech holds down darts, what holds down darts in this because I don't see anything, maybe a picture with the clip inserted might help

You have to do test to see if the barrel helps the flywheel system at all..
ReplyDeleteAs soon as we know if barrels help flywheel blasters at all at high voltages we can start spending big MONEY on crazie motors to make blasters that can fire 200yardS!
Plz do barrel related testes.. remove the barrel.. put the motors in a barricade... etc.. mabye get hold of a Photom storm blaster for china and chop off its barrel as another test option for clip fed barreless blaster if u cant be bothered using a barricade.
WE must know if barrels are good or bad for flywheel. only thing that should be testing with this Rayven.. its its only unique feature that should be investigated
the best flywheel blasters so farhave 0 barrel just a shroud to stop fingers getting stuck in flywheels.. or some sort of thing that looks like a barrel but provides no friction to the darts.. while this design will add friction/rebounding to the darts.. which could sadly possibly make this blaster only good for pinching the motors from/copying the motor array set up for another gun ... test must be done! we can not have stock barrels only beacuse they let the guns layout look cooler if they add no aid to performance they must be removed compleatly.

ReplyDeleteSo the Rayven CS-18 got a further test today at an indoor game. I can't give you a definitive answer on whether it totally owned or not. *Cough* someone *cough* burned one of the motors out at the beginning of the week and we ended up replacing both. However the replacements weren't much chop and the Rayven would cut out after 6 or 7 shots with an accompanying odour of ozone. Was running it at 11 -12 volts and the ranges were still good. As I say, its hard to be conclusive but that voltage range seems about right - bearing in mind it took a whole afternoon running it at 16 volts to bugger it up. Next on the agenda is to swap the motors out for something that will take more juice. Got some in the States lined up

ReplyDeleteLearn physics. Barrels help with springers and air tank based systems because they rely on air pressure contained within the barrel.
ReplyDeleteFlywheels use friction to impart momentum to the darts, so the barrels would never ever improve range (would probably make it worse). Accuracy maybe.
What springer gun has a airtight barrel? i know of nun... only airtight plungers. intersting idea for a mod but would prob be to much presure for the dart and get it stuck.

ReplyDeleteIve noticed that in the Airzone Quickfire belt fed blaster just released... that the pre production image did not have a barrel infront of the flywheel system but in production they added one. this is perhaps some thing to do with a discovery they made about acuracy. etc... I still think in high fire auto mode a barrel can cause issues esspecialy if the barrel is 2 long/badly threaded or moved while fired .. im still suspect about this blaster due to the fact there is no 0 barrel option possible... but its advantage seems to be in the power of its stock motors. ... do you have model numbers etc... I think i will likely get the Airzone or Photom storm for modding... this seems more like a stock gun..
