UT on tour: Score free shirts!

Sooo.. as we mentioned, we got our first batch of promo shirts made up and have already hit the streets in them, playing our own crazy version of Where's Wally:) Every day at various times of the day I'll be Facebooking/Tweeting my whereabouts and I, or my lovely other half will be wearing one of these shirts while we're enjoying our tour of the US east coast. Let's see if any of you happen to notice us and make yourself known:)

I'll be carrying one extra shirt (and yeah, could give you the shirt off my back but it's SOOOO hot here that I really don't think you want it!) with me daily; spot me, come over and say hi and a first edition Urban Taggers tee is yours! (if the size I've got on me doesn't fit you, just give me your details and I'll have one mailed out to you that does) Congrats to Jonathan R. who actually spotted me on the NY subway while I was actually inspecting the shirts after picking them up.. kinda felt you deserved one even if it was pre-promo!

Here's what they look like:

PS:- I know it'll be tempting, but I'd kinda appreciate it if you DON'T try and shoot me with a foam dart or water or anything else- although topical, the girl really doesn't like it that I'm putting the call out for people to 'assassinate' us! Old fashioned meet and greet - much more civil:)

Nerf Mods & Reviews: Tron themed Nerf rip offs:)

A big fan of Tron: Legacy are we, so we got really excited when we saw these on Nerf Mods & Reviews and thought these Tron themed blasters were absolutely trick. They're also Nerf gun knock offs, and actually now that I think about it, there weren't blasters in the film..

Still.. I'm likin' them anyway. Over to you Jerm for more info:)

Max Force Vigilante justice?:)

We've been receiving quite a number of emails lately from parents; thank you so much to our readers for taking the time to let us know your thoughts on the toy blaster world and how much you're liking our blog. A few days ago we received one that had me very very amused and I just had to share it with you; this one came from a mother who from our review had bought the Max Force Shadow Hawk for her son...

Dear Pocket and the Urban Taggers clan,

I wanted to write you letting you know I have been a very big fan of your blog for many months, and have taken much of your recommendations and advice on new "blasters" on the market for my kids. They are religious fans of Nerf, while my husband the big kid himself is always going on about the old super soakers he had as a teenager so it is a topic that brings us all together.

Something that I thought was very amusing happened to us last week and I thought I would share it with you even though I normally would not condone this type of behaviour! Suffice to say we've had no retaliation or repeat offences thus far so fingers crossed!

For months, our street has been experiencing considerable amounts of vandalism and graffiti between the walkway outside our house from neighbour hood drunk teen pranksters. It has been difficult to catch them in the act, but the other night we were so lucky as to spot two teenaged boys sitting by the side fence breaking glass bottles and "tagging" the electrical box. Joshua, my 13 year old son was the first to spot them and alerted my other boy Nick who is 16, and my husband Dan.

Now...Dan and I had just given Joshua a new Max Force Shadow Hawk based on your Urban Taggers review, for having fantastic grades at school.

Of course boys being boys Joshua originally went about using it to deal with our pigeon problem in our upstairs balcony but this time around, he decided with his brother and my husband that he would use it for something else. Apparently the vandal and his friend were making quite the ruckus and had been there for a good 5 minutes. Nick and my husband went on to lean out Joshua's bedroom window balcony and under the cover of darkness, proceeded to shoot the vandals (and the fence) with quite a degree of accuracy with the spitwad gun!!

My husband pointed out that due to the Max Force's high velocity firing functionality, the spit wads would just explode on impact but it made it very difficult for the vandals to know where the shots were coming from, let alone in the dark. Unlike Nerf darts, the ammunition was wet and could not be easily identified especially under darkness, and because the bullets were completely disposable so there was no need to retrieve anything afterwards. While it was completely harmless, there was enough of splat on impact to scare the bajeezus out of those ratbags.

My husband and boys came back down stairs quite satisfied with themselves and could not stop talking about it to me all evening. They have gone on to buy more clips and another Shadow Hawk and are interested in other guns in the Max Force line too. As long as it's not in the house, I don't mind!

Sincerely

Sarah J

Marketing 101: what's in a name..

"Light Strikes"? WowWee's official page
"Light Strikers" Target toy sale catalogue early lay by
One thing that has been bothering my marketing bone since Light Strike was announced is the inconsistencies shown with the actual brand NAME. The importance of branding is to establish recognition with your audience so consistency with something as fundamental as a product name should be pretty rudimentary.

I personally have been referring to the line as 'Light Strike" which seemed pretty official from the logo and press releases, but since then I've also seen the brand referred to as "Lightstrike", "Light Strikers" and "Lightstrikes" and not just in the blog world; this sort of inconsistency has been on official catalogues, price lists and even on the official Wow Wee page.  Seems like sloppy marketing. Guess it could have been worse. "Light Stroke" perhaps?:P

"Arsenal Toys"- not just a Nerf knock off

This Machine Pistol takes it's cues from the Barricade- and then.. mashes them up:)
I stumbled across this interesting (albeit rather ugly) line of blasters while taking Jerm from Nerf Mods + Reviews's lead and had a browse on the internet for some alternative toy blasters perhaps not seen in the western world:) Now, it's pretty common to see a knock of Nitefinder or Maverick, but I have to admit these pieces from "Arsenal Toys" were unique enough to catch my eye.

They seem to be using originally designed shells and a more innovative thought process in the design than the standard knock off. Have a look at the images after the jump.

YouTube - More Nerf spotted in music videos

In a "blink-and-you'll-miss-it" moment, check this music clip at 2:57 from the movie "Take Me Home Tonight" with Topher Grace and the ever lovely Teresa Palmer (whom I plug cos she's Australian). Ooh. Vulcan..

Admittedly it's a lil' quiet on the blaster scene this week:)

Hex-Machina: Mind-controlled Nerf gun

Ommmm.. I sense..foam is in your path..
I admit, I have NO idea what this guy's on about in his blog, but for the more technically minded (hehe) this gentleman has worked out a way to fire off a Stampede ECS with the sheer power of his mind..

The mystery white Maverick REV-6: A photo essay:)

Several months ago, we received a mysterious Nerf Maverick REV-6 in an all new white + grey colour scheme. At the time, we had no intel on it, and we were hoping we'd eventually learn more.. but nope.. nada.  We loved it because it was pretty much our signature colours and drooled at the possibility of other blaster variants in the same white and grey finish. There was speculation that MAYBE this was the new 'gear-up' line, but images of the orange and black striped blasters smashed that theory.

Flash forward a few months and still we're just as in the dark as we were when we got it. What it is/was for, I do not know. I can confirm this ISN'T just a custom paint job- the plastic is actually white and it looks very much factory painted rather than after market enamels.

In any case, it's a good looking design, and just for funsies, I decided to get all arty with my new camera on it. More weird angles after the jump:)

Just a quick announcement..

Internally flawless. The ring isn't bad too:P
While not strictly blaster related, I just wanted to let you all know today's an amazing day for me; I just proposed to my gf in epic song and dance manner in a cafe this afternoon. Luckily, she said yes. So I'm pretty happy right about now:)

That is all:)

Amazon.com: Barricade with bonus stock

This is probably not the most exciting post in the world, but I just thought this was interesting to see Amazon.com listing the Barricade RV-10 with the bonus yellow stock and actually featuring a picture of the Barricade WITH the stock attached. Looks priddy:)

Nerf Dart Tag 2011 commercial: Behind the scenes.. ??

Orange team watched in horror as their Mum's served the Blue Team Gatorade..
If you compare the guys in the orange team in this pic to the blue team guys in my previous post from the new upcoming Dart Tag 2011 commercial, you'll see that they're slightly mismatched.. while the Blue guys are the children of captain awesome, the Orange team really do look rather.. dorky.

Not to mention the poor guy on the right who looks like the moment he takes off, he's going to do himself some serious damage..

YouTube - Estonian Dart Tag Commercial: They mean business

While checking for the new Dart Tag 2011 commercials on YouTube, I found this Nerf Dart Tag commercial from Estonia. Forget Soviet Russia, they got nothin' on how these Estonians do Dart Tag.. and jumping around old barrels? pffft! these guys break into what looks like old haunted crypts for their kicks..

Random: My favourite Dart Tag dude

Charlie was definitely a lover, not a fighter.
Of all the Dart Tag promo images, this one is DEFINITELY my favourite. Of all the blasters in the Dart Tag 2011 range, the Quick 16 is one the LEAST likely to be used single handed. His Ray Charles-style happy expression while gazing up into the clouds, taking three, soon to be four darts in quick succession to the chest and making NO attempt to dodge (Swarmfire is quick..but not that quick!) is gold.

It just shows you don't have to be any good at shooting to enjoy Nerf. Even though he royally sucks, will forever be known as the only guy in the promo who ever got shot (not just once but four times), didn't fight back and probably just cost his team the match, he doesn't care. He's still. JUST. LOVING IT.

This guy just wins. Awesomeness.

Vintage Nerf Commercial: Seth Green has awesome..hair.

A vintage Nerf commercial from 1992 with Robot Chicken creator Seth Green for the Nerf Slingshot. An incredibly inaccurate, pre-blaster foam weapon; my cousin had one and while kinda dorky and used ballz, was still kinda fun:) More importantly.. how's Seth Green's hair? Now, THAT's a fringe.
